PARAGUAY

The Alliance began ministry in Paraguay in 1960 with missionaries from Argentina. For 35 years, there was only one church. Through various outreaches, the Body of believers has grown to include five Alliance churches, which officially received national church status in 2005. Today, the C&MA in Paraguay has a multicultural team that includes missionaries from the United States, Chile, Argentina, Trinidad, and the Philippines. Our workers are using creative church-planting approaches such as English classes, Awana clubs, and basketball outreach. “Nearly every Sunday, we have a new person who attends our church because his child went to Awana,” Alliance workers report.

Among the challenges Alliance workers in Paraguay face are a stagnant economy and high unemployment, with many living at the poverty level. Most Paraguayans follow a syncretistic religion that mixes native beliefs with Roman Catholicism, and many are involved in occult practices. The greatest challenge of our missionaries is identifying and training Paraguayan leaders and pastors who will take the gospel to their people.

National Church

Alianza Cristiana y Missionera: 1 organized church, 5 unorganized groups, 4 ordained ministers, 250 baptized members, and 425 inclusive members

Team Initiatives

  • Plant an Encounter-type church on the main avenue in Asunción as part of the mission’s goal to establish seven self-supporting, missionary-sending churches in the greater Asunción area.

  • Encourage the Paraguayan national church to plant its own churches and to send its own missionaries/pastors into the unevangelized western region and responsive cities in the eastern region.

  • Train national pastors through an established seminary or create an Alliance Bible institute/seminary that will instill C&MA doctrine/ownership.
